Check roof health
Solar panels last 25 years or more. If your roof is aging, replace broken shingles and reinforce the structure now — it’s far cheaper than uninstalling and reinstalling later.
Clear gutters and drains
Leaves and debris lead to leaks and can pool water under mounting hardware, risking both roof and panel efficiency.
Assess orientation and shading
Ask your installer for a shade report. Trim trees or adjust the layout to avoid persistent shadows from chimneys or nearby buildings.
Prep the electrical panel
Solar requires a dedicated breaker and sometimes an upgraded load center. Reserve space and ensure proper grounding ahead of time.
Gather permits and paperwork
Local authorities have specific permitting rules. Collect site plans, a recent utility bill, and proof of ownership to speed up approvals with the utility company.
Plan cable runs
Short, direct routes between panels, inverter, and service drop minimize power losses. Clear attic or crawl‑space pathways for an easier install.
